So being someone who lives on the edge of AT&T service, it did not take me long to find this tweak in iPhone 3.0 software.
When you loose service while typing a SMS in the 2.x software you were out of luck.
Now you get a exclamation mark in a red circle. once your back in service you can tap the circle where you are given the opportunity to re-send the SMS.
